Meet
Joe Smith

Principal

Joe Smith advises life science clients at the intersection of business strategy, real-world evidence, and AI, helping them turn complex healthcare data into decisions that move new therapies to the patients who need them.

In recent projects, Joe has partnered with biopharma clients across rare disease, immunology and oncology to design RWE studies that brought the patient voice into clinical development and commercialization decisions. He has led mixed-methods studies on patient journeys, unmet needs, and treatment experience by applying causal inference and machine learning to translate patient-generated data into evidence that shapes launch strategy, market access, label expansion, and medical affairs engagement.

Before joining Avalere Health, Joe served as senior director, scientific solutions & strategy at Inspire, where he led teams designing and executing mixed-methods studies for clinical and commercial teams. Joe also worked at Carelon Research, as an associate director, where he led RWE programs for top 20 biopharma clients and advised on digital therapeutics and diagnostics. Joe also teaches graduate-level biostatistics, research methods, and health policy courses at Thomas Jefferson University.

Joe holds a PhD in health services research and public health from the University of South Florida, an MBA in healthcare, entrepreneurship, and leadership from the Carey School of Business at Johns Hopkins University, an MPH in health policy and management from Kent State University and undergraduate degrees in psychology/pre-medicine and molecular and cellular biology from Kent State University.
